Sustainability at Urkell: how we make eyewear that respects the planet

Sustainability isn't a marketing claim at Urkell, it's the foundation of everything we make. Every pair of our sustainable sunglasses is designed and produced in Italy using plant-based materials, organic packaging, and a supply chain built to minimize environmental impact and maximize social good.

Our materials: bio-acetate

Urkell frames are made from two plant-based materials, carefully chosen depending on the frame type. Both replace fossil-based plastics with renewable alternatives.

Bio-acetate is a bioplastic produced from cotton fibers and wood pulp. Unlike traditional acetate, which relies on petrochemical plasticizers, bio-acetate uses plant-based plasticizers derived from natural sources. The result is a material that looks and feels like premium acetate, with the depth of color and warm tactile quality we love, but with a fraction of the environmental footprint.

Our materials: bio-grilamid

Bio-grilamid is a bio-based polyamide derived from castor oil, a renewable plant crop. Lighter and more flexible than bio-acetate, it delivers the comfort and resilience needed for frames meant for active use. Bio-grilamid contains up to 60% plant-derived content and directly replaces fossil-based polyamides traditionally used in sports eyewear.

REGENERATED

Key properties:

  • Plant-based: derived from renewable sources (cotton + wood pulp OR castor oil)
  • Biodegradable: breaks down under industrial composting conditions
  • Recyclable: can re-enter the material cycle at end of life
  • Workable by hand: compatible with traditional Italian artisan processes

Built to last: the most sustainable frame is the one you keep.

Before any material choice, the real question for sustainability is this: how long will you keep your sunglasses?

A pair of eyewear replaced every season, no matter how "eco", is less sustainable than a well-made pair worn for years. That's why every Urkell frame is designed and built for longevity:

  • Classic, timeless shapes that don't follow trends
  • High-quality materials and artisan construction
  • Durable hinges and components
  • Free repair guidance: if something breaks, contact us first

Build things that last. It's not just our tagline , it's our approach to everything we make.

Continuous commitment

Sustainability is a process, not a destination. We're continuously working to:

  • Reduce carbon footprint across our supply chain
  • Source an increasing share of materials locally
  • Improve transparency on materials and suppliers
  • Expand our social impact partnerships

We're not perfect. No brand is. But we're genuinely trying and we're ready to be held accountable for every claim we make.
